GameChangers

Learning Experience Design Done Right. An anthology edited by Jonathan Peters PhD and Monica Cornetti, with about 17 authors including Karl Kapp, on moving L&D from content delivery to experience design, from compliance to curiosity. I wrote two of its chapters.

My chapters

Two chapters, two sides of engagement.

Problems, Users, and Actions: Creating the Learner Journey

A clear, practical model for designing meaningful engagement. Engagement comes from progress, not prizes: as long as the next step is clear, nobody feels lost. The chapter lays out a technique I've refined over 12 years, in which progress through the journey itself becomes the resource that keeps people moving.

Rewards as prizes are overrated, but resources will keep us moving forward.

Love, Happiness, and Engagement: A Reflection

The more personal chapter. It asks what actually drives learning and connection, and why the words we usually leave out of L&D conversations, love and happiness, belong at the center of them. It's the thinking behind the Garden.

I talked through both chapters on The Gamification Quest (October 2025).

Cool Monsters, Friends and Punches

How to build engaging journeys. Monsters are the challenges worth facing, friends are the characters worth meeting, punches are the actions worth taking. It's the long version of the model I teach. Join the list to hear first about chapters, pre-orders and launch.
